چکیده

Abstract Phytoplankton growth and microzooplankton grazing rates were measured in repeated profiles of dilution experiments incubated situ on a drift array order to assess microbial production food web characteristics the oligotrophic bluefin tuna spawning habitat Gulf Mexico (May peak seasons, 2017–2018). Grazing often exceeded with processes more balanced overall surface mixed layer, but biomass accumulated mid-euphotic zone. Community estimates (260–500 mg C m−2 day−1) low compared similar open-ocean studies Pacific Ocean. Prochlorococcus was consistent major contributor (113–204 productivity, while diatoms dinoflagellates (2–10 4–13 day−1, respectively) consistently low. Prymnesiophytes, most dynamic component (34–134 day−1), co-dominated 2017 experiments. Unexpected imbalances relative observed for all picoplankton populations (Prochlorococcus, Synechococcus heterotrophic bacteria), suggesting trophic cascade absence mesozooplankton predation large microzooplankton. Study sites abundant larval had shallowest deep chlorophyll maxima significant net positive phytoplankton below layer.

Methane and microbial dynamics in the Gulf of Mexico water column

In contrast to other oligotrophic water bodies the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) hosts an abundance of hydrocarbon seeps, which likely influences the microbial assemblages it hosts particularly regarding the availability of labile carbon in the aphotic GOM. The aphotic zone receives direct injection of seep methane (CH4), but CH4 from an unknown source has been reported at supersaturated concentrations ...

Microbial Response to the MC-252 Oil and Corexit 9500 in the Gulf of Mexico

The Deepwater Horizon spill released over 4.1 million barrels of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico. In an effort to mitigate large oil slicks, the dispersant Corexit 9500 was sprayed onto surface slicks and injected directly at the wellhead at water depth of 1,500 m. Several research groups were involved in investigating the fate of the MC-252 oil using newly advanced molecular tools to elucida...

Changes in Microbial Plankton Assemblages Induced by Mesoscale Oceanographic Features in the Northern Gulf of Mexico

Mesoscale circulation generated by the Loop Current in the Northern Gulf of Mexico (NGOM) delivers growth-limiting nutrients to the microbial plankton of the euphotic zone. Consequences of physicochemically driven community shifts on higher order consumers and subsequent impacts on the biological carbon pump remain poorly understood. This study evaluates microbial plankton <10 μm abundance and ...
